We might forgive you if you were misled into believing that all of the music coming out of San Francisco these days was grungy, psychedelic lo-fi garage rock or laid-back, neon-tinged eletro/synth-pop. After all, we do both of those things very very well. Nonetheless, the truth is that San Francisco boasts a pretty diverse music scene that is just oozing with talent. Take for example, the jazzy blend of chamber pop, trip hop and tango that San Francisco’s Naked Fiction is crafting. This couldn’t get further away from SF’s lo-fi scene if it tried, and yet their music is equally compelling and intoxicating. Their first demos call to mind the sort of sensual, mysterious music you’d expect to hear in the tango halls of Buenos Aires or smoky jazz-clubs in Chicago in the 1920s or 1930s. Singer Carmen King has the sort of sultry delivery that effortlessly lights up a dark room. And with an agile, steady rhythm section and lush string-accents, the band have clearly perfected the sort of smooth grooves and dark, soul-warming melodies that just sound like timeless romance.
