Common Prayer is a Brooklyn, NY group headed up by Jason Russo of Hopewell and formerly Mercury Rev. During the Spring of last year, working alongside a host of like-minded musicians, Russo dragged some half-tuned guitars, myriad scraps of rusty metal and a piano with a knee-high flood watermark into a cow barn on Hill Farm in Steventon, Oxfordshire, and began recording the debut album for Common Prayer. The result of these sessions is an album’s worth of intriguingly weird pop songs that aren’t afraid to defy the listener’s expectations, but remain fully accessible. In other words, the songwriting is clever but based around traditional instrumentation with twangy guitars, ringing piano, sparse percussion, and the occasional organ or electric guitar. The album will be available digitally June 1.
