By all accounts, Tei Shi (a.k.a. Valerie Teicher) had an exceptional CMJ showing this year – which will come as no surprise to fans of her excellent Saudade EP last year. And based on the new material she’s been releasing over the past few weeks, I fully expect her to be one of the highlights at next year’s SXSW.
Indeed, earlier this morning she dropped her latest single “See Me.” The exquisitely textured cut unfurls with a creaking, skittering ambiance buoyed by a lethargic bass riff. Val’s voice is practically glimmering as it sways weightlessly in the breeze alongside the carefully threaded melody. Alongside, her other new single “Bassically” it’s an auspicious introduction to her new collection of material.
If you don’t want to wait until SXSW, you can catch her live at gigs in DC, Brooklyn, Toronto, and Montreal later this month:
11/13 – U Street Music Hall – Washington DC w/ GEMs
11/15 – Babys All Right – Brooklyn NY w/ Yumi Zouma
11/17 – The Drake Hotel – Toronto ON w/ Seoul
11/19 – M For Montreal
