It certainly sounds as if Lukas Freeman has designs to release the spiritual successor to Maxinquaye that Tricky never gave us. His latest single “Beyond” is, by design, structurally off-center and built around skittering, bubbling beats and Lukas’ own smoky vocals before descending into a hypnotic tapestry of glistening ambiance and warped sonics. It’s pretty rad.
