Our favorite man in the San Francisco music scene (a.k.a. John Vanderslice) has just dropped a hot new free EP that you can download over at his website (go ahead and get it now – I’ll wait here). The new EP is titled Green Grow the Rushes and demonstrates Mr. Vanderslice again pushing up against his prior sonic boundaries in new and refreshing ways while simultaneously retaining his signature sound. This is especially true on the track “Penthouse Window” which features a melodic backbone composed entirely of clarinets and John’s vocals which are steeped in foreboding and melancholy for this cut. Green Grow the Rushes features a host of talented supporting musicians including: Ian Bjornstad, Carla Kihlstedt, Daniel Hart (St. Vincent), Matthias Bossi, George Ban-Weiss, and Ben Goldberg (who plays all the clarinets on “Penthouse Window”). Jim Eno from Spoon produced and engineered “Lay Down.”
