You may recall Toro y Moi as the alias of Columbia, South Carolina’s Chaz Bundick. His debut album, Causers of Time, was released on February 2, 2010, and has proven to be one of twenty-ten’s best albums. Back when I first reviewed the album, I described it as a “chillwave” album, albeit a chillwave album that was “particularly lush and demonstrative of a diverse range of influences that include R&B, house, hip hop, and indie rock.” So I was pretty surprised when I heard his latest single (recorded back in 2006 actually) titled “Leave Everywhere” and features no synths, samplers, drum machines, etc. and instead relies only on traditional rock n’ roll instrumentation: electric guitar, bass, drums, and xylophone. But what is most surprising isn’t that Bundick can record songs in different genres. Instead the surprise is just how good he is at both. Check it out and let me know what you think:
