The Ontario, Canada-based duo Evan and Denise (a.k.a. Memoryhouse) have released a video for “Bonfire” – the exclusive, lush b-side to their “To The Lighthouse” 7″ single (which is limited to a mere 500 copies and is available now from Evident Records).
“Bonfire” is hazy, ethereal and understated. Denise’s smooth, feather-light vocals are supported by simple, soft acoustic strumming and sparse tambourine flourishes that sparkle alongside shimmering atmospherics. It further confirms the increasingly obvious realization that despite their inclusion on the Musical Pairings chillwave mixtape, they aren’t really a chillwave group at all. While tracks like “To The Lighthouse” and “The Waves” rested in the fringes of the genre, pretty much everything else they have released demonstrates they are something altogether different. Something prettier, smoother, gentler and more in line with artists like Beach House than with beat-based chillwave main-stays like Neon Indian, Memory Tapes and Washed Out.
The video is based around shimmering footage of an out-of-focus woman wearing a loose-fitting white blouse running joyously in slow-motion through a field. In other words, it is tasteful and lovely, but probably not entirely safe for work.
