Musical Pairings: Jens Lekman – Night Falls Over Kortedala (paired w/ peach-vanilla bean ice cream)

Kasey’s latest flavor of homemade ice-cream is peach-vanilla bean, which tastes exactly how you’d expect a great peach-vanilla bean ice cream to taste:  sweet,  light, fruit-filled and uplifting.  This flavor combination makes Jens Lekman‘s album Night Falls Over Kortedala a perfect pairing for this recipe.  It is a silly, romantic album that is joyous and tastefully over-the-top.

Jens Lekman is a Swedish musician known for writing ambitious, whimsical pop songs with witty lyrics, memorable melodies and surprisingly unpredictable compositions. Night Falls Over Kortedala is the second full length by Lekman, released in 2007, and features a collection of songs about love that he recorded between 2004 and 2007.  It opens with  “And I Remember Every Kiss” which features a soaring orchestral arrangement as Lekman sings “I would never kiss anyone / who doesn’t burn me like the sun / and I remember every kiss / like my first kiss” atop a swelling string crescendo.   “The Opposite of Hallelujah” is an album highlight.  It is a gorgeous and gracefully infectious song about his little sister and trying to communicate his own sorrows to her: “But sister, it’s the opposite of hallelujah / It’s the opposite of being you / You don’t know ’cause it just passes right through you / You don’t know what I’m going through.”   Lekman demonstrates his well-established ability to write clever, narrative lyrics on “A Postcard to Nina” which comically relates the story of him struggling to pretend to be his lesbian friend’s boyfriend to help her fool her parents before he gets caught in a series of lies.   Buy the album over at Insound.
